Few words about this tutorial: I can't even count the times where people asked me about how I paint hair, so I decided to create a tutorial which sums up briefly my (more or less) standar philosophy of the procedure I follow for painting it. And this is according my way of painting whether or not looking at a reference image -in this one, I wasn't looking at any reference image. (and the tech info: I painted this tuft of hair with photoshop CS4 and Wacom Tablet Bamboo)
Before watching this video tutorial, download hair brushes of your choise. Not those brushes which contain ready strands / tufts of hair but the ones that have small dots and when you draw with them, the result is having many lines drawn at the same time. Or you can work alternatively with a small hard round brush.
Please, if something doesn't make sense, feel free to ask me, I will answer and clarify things!
Some useful tips: *Develop alternative ways of working -it will prevent Block-moments and will make you more flexible in painting an artwork. *For even more better and realistic results, you have to look at a reference image and observe it very, very carefuly. *...and study it! Observe the source of light and colors and translate what you see into your painting styles. *Your brushes are your best friends in painting, so, get to know them, play with them as much as you can in several modes and opacities, test them over other colors and see what they do! *Because, if you know your digital tools / brushes well and their usage, it will be way more easy for you to paint! *Talking about brushes, my all time weather / main brush-sets for textures that I use come from -visit him, you will find amazing stuff there! *Take short breaks during painting so to give rest to your eyes. *Practice as much it is possible and your hard work will be rewarded!
Have fun with your practicing and enjoy what you do! And laugh a lot -it's such a great mood fixer.
